In 1979, as principle of Hope Christian School in Beit Jala, Bishara Awad saw many of his students travel abroad for university education. Those who wanted to study theology left the country and many never returned. His idea to create a Bible College in Palestine, where students could study and continue to serve in their communities, grew from a small dream to a flourishing reality. After presenting his idea to a group of local Arab pastors, one gave him a check for $20 to start on a new venture. From here, more support followed and they started their first class with 9 students in the same year.

From the beginning, Bethlehem Bible College’s vision was to prepare Christian leaders to serve Arab churches and society. BBC trains students to model Christ-centeredness, Godly humility, and biblical wholeness. As life-long learners, graduates follow Jesus’ way of creative justice and mercy in both their personal and professional lives.

In 2010 Bethlehem Bible College finished construction on a new Student Centre. The building is being utilized more and more for classes, chapel, and for special events. The teachers and students are enjoying studying and working in this bright and attractive environment.

At Bethlehem Bible College, students are their most valuable asset. Many BBC graduates are already actively serving the Christian community throughout the land. They are the leaders of the future. These young leaders will play a dynamic role in helping the College to emerge as a leading Christian institution in coming decades.

Dr. Jack Sara with HOPE Board Member, Leslie Bartley

In his book, Light Force, Brother Andrew of Open Doors recognized one of the graduates at the time, Jack Sara, as a significant leader. On page 265 of the book, Brother Andrew quotes Jack, “At Bethlehem Bible College we are confronted with a Biblical worldview. That was when I started really studying the Bible and understanding who God is and therefore how to view life.” Dr. Jack is now the President of Bethlehem Bible College.

Today, BBC is a flourishing college with academic programs accredited through MEATE (Middle East Association for Theological Education) and the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education. Bethlehem Bible College, with its current team of highly qualified local faculty and staff, has come a long way in preparing educated Christian leaders able to serve the Palestinian community. As President Emeritus, Bishara Awad would say, the “Church is now awake” in Palestine and BBC serves a vital role in providing for the need of continued Christian education in Palestine, as well as serving the needs of the local community in the face of numerous political and social pressures.

Scholarships

HOPE Outreach of Canada is dedicated to sharing the love of Christ world wide and particularly in the Holy Land. In an effort to bolster the struggling and pressured church there, HOPE Outreach provides scholarships to students in biblical studies at Bethlehem Bible College (BBC). It has been our privilege to support the church in this way since 2008.

Each year thanks to the partnership of caring Canadian Christians, HOPE provides much needed scholarships to numerous students at BBC.
